Being offered tonight is the “PANORAMA” Mechanical Bank. This is one of the house/building group of mechanical banks. Some examples of the building banks are the “Magic Bank”, “Home Bank”, “Novelty Bank”, “New Bank”, “Cupola Bank” and others. Bank and Cupola Bank are somewhat rarer that the “Panorama”, it is generally agreed upon that the Panorama is the most desirable and interesting bank in the building group. A “panorama” is, of course, a view or picture unrolled before ones eyes, with a view in different directions. This bank has a series of different pictures on a cylinder form. As a matter of fact the patent papers indicate a connection between the name and the fact that the pictures move into place, each replacing the one previously see. The bank was patented by J. Butler of Lancaster, Mass. Selchow of New York City and John Richter of Brooklyn, New York. It was manufactured by the J. The bank operates by inserting a coin in a slot located in the center of the back slope of the roof. Pushing the coin into the slot engages a lever that causes the cylinder to revolve and thus show each picture in sequence. There are six pictures on the cylinder and were made using varying themes, such as boating, fishing, children and like this one different farm animals. Coins are removed by means of a screw-held sliding coin trap located on the bottom of the base. The bank has been meticulously cared for and is a superb example of the “Panorama” bank. The pictures on the cylinder show fading consistent with the aging process. The bank works properly and is approximately 4 1/2″ wide, 4 5/8″ long and 6 1/2 high.
